Déjà vu
June 23, 2010

Last week we tackled this same WOD with dumbbells. This week - a barbell! Changing a simple variable can give the workout an entirely different feel, and effect your performance. Post your thoughts/feeling about the the two workouts to comments. Which was harder? What felt like a better WOD? Which did you perform better/worse? Etc. Keep the thoughts coming!

WOD

5 Rounds each for load of:

5 Deadlift
5 Hang Power Clean
5 Push Press
5 Front Squat

Each round must go unbroken(20reps). Increase load through each round.

95, 135, 145.5, 155 and failed on the push press at 185. made a way too big of a jump from 155 to 185...i didnt do the dumbell WOD but this was a good one...amazing how tough those front squats became after the other movements...

135, 145.5, 155, 185,185,,,,,,Reaally struggled with my wrist in the rack position.  On my first set of 185 only got to 3 push presses before my wrist failed.  Second set of 185 got through my first front squat before my wrist had issues.

The main difference for me between the two workouts was the strain that DB's put on my grip and forearms.  I had no issues holding on to the barbell today.  I need to work on the flexibility in my arms for the rack.  Good times.

95, 115, 145, 155, 155, 155

the workouts felt similar, except the pushpress wasnt as hard to stabalize with the barbell, and my wrist flexibilty was really struggling.  once i finished the push press i couldnt push through all the front squats without my wrists giving out.  tough day!

95, 115, 135, 155 (4 Front Squats), 135

I really wasn't planning on going for 155, but with Roman there ... I had a little voice telling me to go for it ;-)

@ 155 I managed to get through the Push Presses which is what I was worried about and then after doing 4 front squats ... the bar slipped on to my arms and then it was a circus act trying to get it back up ... ended up with the bar on my hips in full squat ... re-grouped and proceeded to play limbo with the bar until the bar won.  After that I was shot.

95, 115, 135, 145, 150 fail - my left arm retired coming down from my third push press :-(

The DB definitely require more stabilization from the forearms, but I felt the wrist transitions were easier - especially the transition from cleans to the push press. After watching Phil's instant replay I could see that I cheat to my strong side when I use a barbell. I was disappointed that I didn't complete my last round, especially after 3 push press reps!

When you first come to xfit you cant figure out a push jerk and end up push pressing... Once you realize the greatness of the push jerk its hard to push press.
