Pic- Chris R. bacon sizzling after a WOD
After a workout when pain is rushing through your body, why does collapsing to the ground feel so good? Anyone who has been an athlete has always been told to never lay on the ground or go to a knee by their coach but yet in CrossFit it is widely accepted as the norm. Personally I can't help but collapse after a tough WOD. After expending max effort it just feels so good to just lay down! There is nothing wrong with this method but it just brings up interesting questions. Are the people collapsing putting out max effort while the people who are standing after sandbagging? So what do you do after your WOD, lay on the ground, sit down on the benches, run outside and pass out, bacon sizzle? Post your post WOD routine to comments.
WOD
For time:
Ski 1000m
30 pound Dumbbell Thrusters, 50 reps
30 Pull-ups
Post time to comments.

For my part, I desperately want to lay down and close my eyes... I am just afraid of chocking on my own vomit in the prone position. Also, after Miko Salo, I am afraid of being eaten by wild animals.

I've really tried to stay on my feet after this journal article about Mikko Salo and the concept of sisu http://journal.crossfit.com/2010/01/sisu.tpl
My favorite quote from Mikko regarding Sisu: “I once read an article about it: when animals surrender they go lying on their back. From then on I decided I would never go lying on my back. It’s a sign of weakness and surrendering. I’m never lying on my back.”

I just posted a little cheat-sheet for Ski-Erg form. Check it out.

Thanks Jimi

You will generally see me putting my shit away after a WOD before I sit down. This is not because I was sandbagging...this is because I know that if I sit or lay down after a WOD I will likely not get up again (Not to mention how much it hurts to actually get back up after lying/sitting down)..and all I'm thinking is that I don't want to be punished with burpees for not cleaning up. Then I will hobble my way over to the benches and sit for 20 to 30 minutes until I feel like I can actually move enough to drive home.
Thanks Jimi...very helpful!

I used to collapse on my back ... then I saw that Miko Salo video and started doing the take one knee approach ... I also lay flat on my stomach (murder scene style) since I figure that is the predator position as opposed to the surrendering animal.
However .... there are exceptions. The bacon sizzle is in full effect after a 2K or 5K row and at the end of FGB.

I respect Mikko Salo, the "sisu" philosophy, and his right to freedom of thought and speech.
But eff that.
I will curl up in a fetal position and stay there as long as I wish. I will gasp, slobber, and blow snot bubbles until my heart rate returns to under triple digits. I will drop f-bombs, curse anyone and everyone, and make empty promises to God that I will never drink again if he/she/it just makes me not hurt as bad as I feel after wodding. I don't care what you do before or after a wod. As long as you give your best effort on any given day, you have earned the right to do whatever you damn well please.
I feel like surrendering would be laying down on the ground DURING a WOD, which thankfully I haven't done yet, that I can recall. Laying down AFTER?? Sure.

Didn't suck as much as I would have thought after a night of drinking. I might have to go the Mr. Phil route. mayeb the booze just numbs the pain.

Hello from China! Miss working out at the gym even if it would mean doing a workout like this one. I just know it will be hard when I get back. Yesterday I did walk a lot (probably 6 miles) at the World Expo. Lots of rain, cold and people! Looking forward to getting back to the Crossfit family!

9:37. I didn't lie down, but the Clown came up into my throat a little bit. I guess I pushed hard enough. My wife laid down, and was eaten by wild animals.
Sam, I don't think lying face down on the ground after a WOD is a good idea either. It might invite a different kind of savagery.

Not sure what Brian is referring to, but from now on post-WoD I will sit with my back to the wall Mafia-style.

I'm with Phil here--nothing wrong with curling up into the fetal position.
I wonder if there's any scientific reason why people suggest you shouldn't lie down immediately after a WOD?

If I am not on the ground after a WOD I am usually outside by the dumpster on the right throwing up or in the bathroom throwing up & splashing cold water on myself.
If you can do much after a WOD you are a sandbagger.
