Great turn out at our first ever pool WOD!!! This will become a reoccurring event along with our summer beach workouts!!!!

WOD

50-40-30-20-10 Reps of:

Air Squats
Push Ups

In between each exercise you swim 25m. For example start with 50 air squats on deck of pool , then swim 25m to other deck and complete 50 push ups, then dive back in swim 25m and do 40 Air squats and so on. You finish with a 25m swim.

I should have done the back squats :-)

The pool WOD was tough, but it sure felt great to be outside this morning.

Sounds like a fun pool work out.

One summer, I trained with a water polo team in Budapest, Hungary. All of the afternoon pool workouts were in sweat pants and t-shirts. It was a real challenge to swim and tread water in the wet clothes. Maybe we can incorporate this training element into a future pool WOD?

Check out this article I just read by this writer named Pahl O'Hare aka FAIL with his reason of why Crossfit is unsafe. I just think he couldnt complete a WOD actually. Submit a Yes or No on his silly ol debate, but as you can see he is the only idiot that feels its unsafe.

My previous 1RM was 265#, so I got that 3x today and felt great.  Then I wanted to get a single rep @ 275 aftewards and did for a new PR.

Good work by all the new folks today at the 9am class.

Awesome times posted for the swim WOD!  I thought of every excuse to try and show up to work late so I could attend, but in the end, I realized I could use the pool at work during my lunch.

My time was 28:16.

Per my request, Brian texted me his time earlier this morning.  As I was going through the WOD, I realized I was WAY OFF his time and could not figure out what was wrong.  At about the half-way point, I realized that I am not good at estimating distance as the pool in which I was swimming was 50m long...not 25m.  So before you judge my time, may I suggest you first consider the doubled distance and then choose to judge my lack of distance perception.

I am going to chalk this one up with the April Fool's Day failure...but it was a great WOD.  Definitely going to start incorporating the pool more often!

A brief observation:

Swimming definitely requires a completely different set of lungs.  You may be able to run with the best of them.  Put yourself in a pool and require breath control, BAM!...whole new ball game.  I believe this goes for the opposite, too.  However, the fear of drowning was a clear motivational source to keep pressing when you feel like stopping mid-lap.  Perhaps liken it to doing a 400m run with a car tailing you.

Bummed I couldn't make the pool work out, I wasn't sure it I would make it back in time to get ready for work. Definitely hope to make the next one though!

Great pool WOD this morning! I was a little disappointed my time was shamed by just Brian and all the girls instead of the rest of the morning crew!! For everybody lamenting missing the pool this morning, I'm kicking myself for having missed the deadlift and back squat WODs in the last week. I'll have to double down one of these days and see where my standard is. For now I'd say I'm still a guppy!

Fun workout. Although I will say it went down in a completely unexpected manner. I can normally bang out pushups, but they killed me today. The swim actually felt like the recovery portion to me, so I think I would have preferred the above-mentioned 50m pool... I could have used more time not doing pushups :)

Oh and.... My first post :)

I read the article Frtiz posted and I believe you have to pass a test now to use your Level 1 Certification to train.

I think Crossfit can be dangerous if you go to a globo gym and try to do it without proper training... Thats why I go to CFE, so Nick can yell at me everytime I do something unsafe and show me the correct way to do it or put me in the corner on a time out.  Any type of training or sport can be dangerous if you try to do it without being trained.

I think its important for people to take accountability for there own safety.  If you feel like you need to stop, then stop.  If you ignore your bodies signals to stop and get rhabdo it is your own fault.

@ Haley. I understand your point but the point of his article was that this method of exercise is unsafe. Yes, any sport you do may not be safe, but with the proper use of safety and qualified trainers makes this a Safe method. Well he does not see this because he feels that all Crossfit affiliates are just weekend qualified non experienced trainers that has no regards for safety. This looks like a narrow minded overview that he must of received from one gym that he may of attended. At CFE, from the 2 Group classes and the Crossfit Essential workouts I done, I see safety emphasized  and monitored even when you think you are not being watched. I guess my aggression on this article is due to how people just look at one aspect of a situation but don't see the whole picture. Nothing in life is 100% safe. I cant catch a cramp right now typing this and die due to dehydration, but does that qualify as typing being unsafe. lol

@ Fritz.  Great discussion topic! My intial reaction to the article is: Who is the author? What are his health and fitness qualifications? What is his CF training and certification experience if at all?  As with so much misinformation that's posted on the web, any Monday morning quarterback can post an opinion without having the experience or knowledge to support the arguments. Mr O'Hare's argument is nothing new and has been posed in many forums since Crossfit's inception, and by more publicly qualified individuals.  However, the tens of thousands of individuals who have participated with Crossfit for years let their results speak for themselves.  That Crossfit is scaleable and works for men and women, young and old (impressively displayed in the CF Masters Regionals!) should be a testament to its validity and safety in the athletic realm.  In addition, the fact that so many service organizations (USMC, police, firemen) have taken on this training format (in no small part to guys like Jimi) for the purposes of 'functional fitness' , should only enhance the argument for Crossfit's benefits.

Anything we do assumes a small amount of risk, to include getting behind the wheel to drive to work.  I agree with Haley that's it's on the individual to assume responsibility and know his/her limits.  Across the board, if you look at any other athletic sport or training, there is risk and a chance for injury.   The key is to recognize the risks, mitigate (not eliminate) them and decide what level of training/competition is appropriate.  Knowing your limits and what pain indicators mean is something that comes with experience and time.  However, this can't be accomplished sitting on a couch reading all the 'what-ifs' on WebMD.   If the discussion of rhabdo and other dangers with CF is to create awareness about training within your limits, than it's productive.  However if these points are being used to write off the sport all together, maybe Mr. O'Hare should let us know what box he's with (if at all) so they know where they've got weakness to root out.  If you're not teetering on the edge, go do something else.
